Your Role as the ‘Chief Energy Officer’

A key role of any leaders is that of  a leader is the ‘chief energy officer.’

The most fundamental part of a leaders role is to recruit, inspire, focus, direct, and regularly re-energise those they lead.

Energy is contagious — especially so if you’re a leader with the position and power that comes with the role. The way you’re feeling (and you choose how you feel!) at any given moment influences how the people who work for you feel and ultimately how well they perform. A leader’s responsibility is not to do the work of those they lead, but rather re – energise them in every possible way to bring the best of themselves to their jobs every day. This is what Liz Wiseman called the ‘Multiplier’ leadership effect

Think about the best person you have worked for. How would you describe them? I seminars and with clients I have asked this question many times the ten most common answers:

  • Encouraging
  • Inspiring
  • Kind
  • Positive
  • Integrity
  • Supportive
  • Fair
  • Decisive
  • Intelligent
  • Visionary

Only three of those qualities have anything to do with intellect. More than two-thirds are  emotional. Or to put another way, are part of your emotional intelligence.

Leaders lead not just by the actions they take, but by the way they make people feel along the way. I
